El Salvador Mission Trip - July 24 - July 31
Ministry Day 1 - by Angela Young
El Salvador - July 25, 2010
We made it! We landed safely in El
Salvador on Saturday afternoon. Praise
God: all 26 pieces of checked luggage
also arrived! Our translators, Yuri and
Mersi, met us at the airport with two vans
to pick us up. We filled one van with all of
our luggage and then all of us (13 on our
team, 2 translators, and 1 driver) piled
into the other one. We got close very
quickly! After a quick lunch at a mall
food court, we drove for about an hour
and a half to get to Chualchuapa. Our
hotel is nice, and the owners and
employees go out of their way to meet
our needs. Last night for dinner, they
made us papusas, a traditional
Salvadoran food.
This morning we went to church. The music was wonderful, and the sermon was uplifting. The pastor and
his congregation all made us feel welcome. After church, we went to the grocery store and purchased the
food we need to feed a village later this week. We purchased food to feed 50 families. After we sorted the
food, we spent the rest of the afternoon playing games and resting. For dinner, we were served another
traditional Salvadoran meal: beans, potatoes, and plantains.
Thank you all for your prayers. We are all looking forward to seeing what God is going to do in us and
through us this week!
Ministry Day 2 - by Sarah Sargent
El Salvador - July 26, 2010
Top Ten funny moments of the mission trip thus far:
• Mike didn’t realize that his suitcase strap had fallen
in grease when he wiped the sweat off his face.
• 16 people can fit in a 12 passenger van with 13
carry-on pieces of luggage.
• Night one - Wilma, Donna, Brittany and Liz were
ready to kill a screeching cat.
• Night two - everyone in the hotel was ready to kill
a mocking cat.
• Cameron taught us a new appreciation for toasters.
• If your bathroom light doesn’t work…plug it into the outlet.
• It’s possible that the statues in the hotel come to life each night, like in Night at the Museum.
• Ralph and Jerry do not like walking in the market place….but then again anyone over 5’5” would
have trouble.
• Wilma gets giddy when she gets ice cream, we’re hoping tomorrow it might get her to let
her hair down.
• Rainy season and flip flops cause Sarah and Jenn to slide around like Olympic ice skaters.
Ministry Day 3 - by Jerry & Mona Young
El Salvador - July 27, 2010
Day 3: We started out the day visiting a Christian school. Cameron and Mike put on a puppet show and
we all sang songs with them. They impressed us when they started singing Lord You Are Good in English.
They learned English from Roger Brown a retiree from Texas, who lives in El Salvador. After singing then
came the playing. Footballs, soccer balls, Frisbees, and jump rope were everywhere you looked and it
wasn't just the kids playing either. We all took part in the fun. After spending several hours with the kids it
was time to go and they were all very thankful and they showed it by giving hugs and high fives. After lunch
we went to the market and it was more a local resident market for the people to buy fresh vegetables, fruit,
lots of eggs and chicken. Really not what we were expecting. Later we took a "Train" ride (really it was a
jeep pulling a trailer) around the city and down by the lagoon. That evening we had devotions by Sara and
afterward made plans for the next day.
Day 4: Up and at um early....we were ready to see what God had in store for us today! First we went back
to the church we attended Sunday morning and the kids were waiting when we arrived. We set up 2 rooms
for vacation bible school, one was doing a craft while the other was singing songs and having a puppet
show. When we finished with each group we switched rooms. Next was play time again! There are some
very talented children here and they play hard. Following the games it was snack time, we served juice
and cookies. While they ate their snacks they listened to a testimony, thanks to our interpreters. Then it
was time for them to go home and get ready for school. Here some kids go to school in the morning and
the rest go in the afternoon. We took a break, had lunch and waited for the second round of kids to do it all
over again. Between both sessions we had over 100 kids! After we were done we went back to the hotel
for dinner and had our devotion presented by Donna.
This is our (Jerry and Mona) 3rd mission trip and God has truly blessed us. We don't want to make this too
long, but we have to talk about the wonderful people we are here with. First there's a father/daughter team
Ralph & Brittany from Reynoldsburg Church. Ralph is a quiet, soft spoken man who has a very deep root
for the Lord. Brittany is a wonderful young woman who loves the work she is doing here and her dad.
Wilma is from Reynoldsburg and she is a sweetheart, she attracts the children here as if she were their
own grandma. Donna and Elizabeth our mother/daughter team is from Reynoldsburg as well. Donna is a
very strong woman and shows her love for God in everything she does, even soccer. Elizabeth has jumped
right in and is very good with kids. Mike who is from Victory Church, is a soon to be Lawyer and has a vast
knowledge of the Bible. Angela from Westerville Church is a great person, a wonderful singer and the kids
love her. Julie is from North Church and her 3 loves are God, Family & Church, but now she has a 4th......
Missions! Cameron, our young sidekick from Hillview Church, has opened up this week and showed his
love for all people by the things he does. Sara is from Reynoldsburg Church too and this is the 2nd
mission trip we have been on with her. Her love for life and God is shown everyday. Jennifer is from
Hillview Church also and is our leader this week. She's done a fantastic job keeping us on schedule and
making sure everything runs smooth. It is evident she truly loves what she is doing.
We thank the Lord everyday for letting us be his servants. We hope that this week the ones that we have
touched see that the Lord lives in us and helps them come closer to God. We have been blessed by those
we have met here this week and those we have yet to meet.
God Bless You,
Jerry & Mona Young
